"I Wanna Take You Away Now" - Alfred Hall

March 19, 2019 by Lauren Basler in dream-pop

While I miss the good old days of scouring the internet to find music, I must admit that I do enjoy having Spotify deliver a custom list of tunes every week. Spotify nailed my Discover Weekly this week with “I Wanna Take You Away Now” by Norwegian indie pop duo, Alfred Hall.

I discovered this tune on the heels of a weekend trip to Galicia. It was one of those perfectly chill weekends thanks to a shared “go with the flow” attitude. I feel like that sentiment is well represented by both the music and lyrics here.

Dark days, they always pass
Shine some light upon my face
I want to wake up
I can’t sit here alone
Afraid to do the things I used to
What is going on?
Somewhere somebody’s hoping
To put an end to all the fun tomfooleries
I know they can’t destroy it
Though delusions somehow manage to live on

I wanna take you away now
We can just leave tonight
I wanna take you away now
Nothing could be more right
Do as we like, do as we like
Have a good time

Dark clouds, they always pass
Still I go around thinking how they might not
Somewhere down the line
This will only be a sad distant memory

I feel slightly forlorn that the trip that I had been looking forward to is now over but I appreciate the little reminder that dark clouds always pass and will plan another trip to “do as I like.”

Alfred Hall has plenty of other chill dream-pop tunes that were made to go with the flow. “Foreign Coast” and “Since I Saw You” are two that will undoubtedly be stuck in heavy rotation for a while.

"Pana" - Usted Señalemelo & Tom Tom

February 13, 2019 by Lauren Basler in dream-pop

Mis amigos me apodaban "lolita mi panita".

Every once in a while I find a song that just gets me and this is one of them. Not only is this song in Spanish, it’s got a groovy guitar riff, excellent lyrics, and an excellent name “PANA.” I learned the word “pana,” which means “friend” in a few Latin American countries, many years ago when living in Ecuador.

This song doesn’t speak about friendship but about the need and desire to follow one’s path in life. That said, the name makes it difficult to not consider the song through the context of friendship.

Friendship is a funny thing. If there’s anything that I’ve learned with certainty in my life, it’s that everyone is looking for a sense of belonging and that friends will always come and go. Lately, many people have entered my life and are leaving it almost just as quickly as they’ve arrived. While it pains me to say goodbye, I know that a good friend understands that you need to let people follow their path and that my life is much richer for having had these relationships in the first place.

Usted Señalemelo is an Argentinian group with a lot of energy, much like many of the people I’ve been meeting in Barcelona. Lately I’ve been exploring a lot of Rio Platense music with new friends, but this song was left stuck on repeat for a few days.

Tom Tom kicks this remix up a notch with a funky guitar riff and perfect piano foundation. It’s a song you’ll want on your summer playlist while dancing on the beach after an asado. ;-)

Having said all this, I need to give a shout to my new music dealer (who recently moved) for sharing this jam. Barcelona misses you.
